Tui na massage makes use of Chinese Medicine theory, working through the same channels and points as acupuncture. However, the treatment is delivered using a variety of massage techniques rather than needles.
As the techniques are applied via the acupuncture channels, tui na can be used to treat any area of the body. Treatment is generally delivered through clothing (provided the fabric is light) or through a thin, cotton cloth. There are some exceptions, for example if working on the head.
As is typical of Chinese Medicine, treatment considers the broad picture, aiming to treat holistically rather than focusing solely on symptoms. Like acupuncture, it is commonly used for pain relief but has many more applications. Some people turn to tui na for help with a specific problem, some use it to help maintain good health and some choose it simply for its relaxing, calming qualities to enhance their sense of wellbeing.
