Neurological physiotherapy focuses on treating neurological impairments and long term conditions. These are degenerative disorders that aren't going to go away - such as a stroke, frailty disorder (falls), Parkinsons, or MS.
Neuro physiotherapy is goal-oriented. It can help you to adapt to your impairment and enable you to do the things that you would normally do. A stroke for instance can affect someone in many different ways - from standing, walking, moving or getting out of a chair. The purpose of neurological physiotherapy is to help you regain these functions.
HOW CAN NEURO PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP ME?
Neuro physiotherapy can help you achieve goals and regain functions such as tying your shoelaces, getting in and out of a car, brushing your hair or picking up a cup. It can help with weaknesses you may have - strengthening muscles or improving coordination.
During your consultation you will go through long term strategies to help with your condition, make sure that your muscles don't get too tight and prevent stiffness. This may be a coping strategy if you have Parkinsons, to help you take better steps and walk rather than shuffle. In the case of a stroke it may be a prevention strategy to lower the risk of contractures. Your treatment will include methods to maximise joints and muscles into function.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This type of physiotherapy works alongside your diagnosis, rather than giving the diagnosis itself. Instead you will have a full, comprehensive assessment to identify any problems and the areas that are causing you difficulty. Fiona will then work with you to set realistic goals, and provide with a functional way to achieve these goals - such as personalised exercises and strengthening stretches. This could be anything from going to a seated position to standing, practicing getting off the bed or balancing exercises.
The length of session varies person-to-person, depending on the needs of the individual and what they are comfortable doing. Each session is tailored to your ability. Home visits can be arranged.
