Reflexology is a holistic balancing therapy which targets the zones and reflex points of all surfaces of the feet and ankles, using a variety of touch techniques.
In ancient Egypt, hieroglyphics depicted reflexology which was considered a medical treatment. Similar medical treatments using reflexology feature in many historical records across the globe, before communication between continents was possible, and before modern medicine was developed.
Reflexology is a powerful therapy which has many benefits; increases circulation, improves oxygen uptake, eliminates toxins, improves digestive function, stimulates nerve function, increases energy levels, promotes beneficial sleep. Aches and pains can be relieved and mood can be improved. Reflexology can calm the central nervous system inducing a deeply relaxed state, which has effects long after the treatment has finished. Many people report that feelings of anxiety and stress are markedly reduced following reflexology, this is especially beneficial in today’s world.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It is unclear exactly why reflexology has such an effect on the body. There are a few different theories about how it works. Historical theories suggest that when you feel stress, fear or tension, your body can block energy flow or qi (pronounced ‘Ki’ or 'Chi') which can cause imbalances that lead to physical ailments. Stimulating these reflex points can release these blockages in the body systems, helping them to function fully and enabling the energy to flow and circulate as intended. Some modern theories consider that the nervous system responds to touch, promoting relaxation which has a huge effect on the physical being. Other theories suggest that the brain can create pain in response to an emotional or mental distress, by rebalancing the body systems, these issues may be alleviated.
